Fundraising and philanthropy are rooted in an extractive system. When I worked as a major gift officer, I often joked that I wished the government would tax the wealthy enough that I would be out of a job. While I said that jokingly, it did highlight an inherent tension I felt as a progressive person working in philanthropy. Our modern philanthropic practices are rooted in extractive and colonial practices. The nonprofit industrial complex is rooted in and perpetuates white supremacy culture.

There aren't quick solutions to these systemic issues, but there are tools that are critical to dismantling them. In all my work, I strive to incorporate the equitable practices developed by incredible fundraisers of the Community-Centric Fundraising movement, as well as other exceptional thought leaders in the philanthropy space. I am grateful for their thought leadership and labor, and I hope you all share their voices and financially support their work.
